THE RAW RANDOS SERIES

This series of beat tapes came about on the heels of the last entry to my Birth Chart Series, “ASCENDANT” (see below). 2020 & 2021 proved to be my most productive years since college, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since I was creating at such a proficient rate, and had so many great songs/drafts/ideas, I decided to really capture the spirit of my college years and compile beat tapes from all the tracks I’ve made, then release them AS IS. No mixing other than what I normally do in my session files, and no mastering. STRAIGHT RAW. The series has since expanded to include beats that I’ve made in the years prior to the pandemic that were either throwaways from/before the Birth Chart Series, beats that I shopped to rappers that either declined or sat on them, and some ideas that I didn’t really like when I initially made them, but learned to love over time. Unlike the Birth Chart Series, this series is made to be played in any order you like. It is, truly, RANDOM.

THE BIRTH CHART SERIES

This is how a lot of you came to know Wrex Mason. This series of projects was first conceptualized in 2015 after a terrible bout with depression that almost ended me. While in my healing stage, a close friend of mine read a daily horoscope for me and proceeded to ask me what my Moon & Rising signs are, to which I replied “I don’t know”. They told me to look up a site that helped me calculate those signs. Once I found out what they were, and looked up the personality traits of those signs, they helped me to truly understand how I’m wired. And once I was in a better state, I was able to start creating again.

At first, I was just writing for the sake of writing songs. But listening back one day, I had discovered that a lot of the tracks I was making sounded pretty cohesive together, and that’s how “Aquarius Sun” was born! From then on, I decided to work that style of creating into my regular process, and I haven’t looked back.

“Taurus Moon” was heavily inspired by a family trip to South Africa & Zimbabwe. As a Black creative, it meant so much to go back to the continent where all life (but especially Black American lives) originated from. Everywhere I went, I was told “Welcome Home” by many native African people. I got to witness wildlife, soak in culture, learn some of the histories of both countries, hear people speak in Zulu & Xhosa, and really admire the beauty of those languages.

“ASCENDANT” was created over the pandemic on the heels of the release of “Taurus Moon”. Being cooped up inside my BK apartment, with little-to-no knowledge of this foreign disease that brought this country to its knees, and little-to-no knowledge about my job security or when I’d be able to see family & friends in person again weighed heavy on my mental. As a result, I started to deal with anxiety & depression again, but creating helped me quell a lot of that.

Overall, I believe that this series of albums represents understanding who you are, overcoming the war in your head and finding peace. If you’ve never heard this albums before, click on the links on the right to listen (also available on Apple Music, Tidal, and other major streaming platforms).
